The Chancel and High Altar. To the right of the beautiful East window can be seen a small alabaster statue of the Virgin and Child standing on a projecting corbel. This statue dates from the 14th century and a much prized possession. Local legend states that it used to stand in a niche above the front entrance and was curtsied to upon entry by the ladies. This somehow angered the vicar who tore it down and threw it into the churchyard. This sacrilegious act incurred terrible outrage, and he was forced to restore it to its original position.
