Major repairs to the bridge are needed. Northumberland County Council originally wanted to carry out the work - expected to take up to 28 weeks, with a closure period of around 10 weeks - early in the New Year LinkExternal link until it was pointed out that the only suitable diversion, via Carrshield and Coalcleugh, was often impassable during winter months. The work will now be carried out from July 2017 LinkExternal link .
