William Booth is best known as the Methodist preacher who founded The Salvation Army and became its first General in 1878. Although he wasn’t born in London, he did many good works in the East End, helping improve the living conditions of many people living in Whitechapel. This statue on Mile End Road is located near to the spot outside the Blind Beggar pub where Booth first preached in 1865. It was unveiled in 1979 and is a replica of the statue by George Edward Wade which was erected on Champion Hill in London, next to the Salvation Army's training college in London in 1929.
