Church Court, Inner Temple, London
On the right of the picture is the southern side of Temple Church. This ancient and beautiful church was built in 1185 by the Knights Templar, the order of crusading monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to and from Jerusalem in the 12th century. It is unusual in that it has a round Nave which was the original temple, intended as a likeness to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Chancel, the outside of which is shown above, was added about a hundred years later.
