TG5207 : Town wall [2]

taken 8 years ago, near to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England

Town wall [2]
Town wall [2]
The wall is seen in part of the ugly Market Gates shopping centre. It is claimed that Yarmouth has the second best preserved medieval town wall in England, after York. Building the wall, a scheduled ancient monument, was begun in 1261 when Henry III granted permission to enclose the town with a wall and ditch.
The wall was mostly complete by 1346 but work on it continued until about 1400. The wall was more than 23 feet high and 2,280 yards long, with 10 gates and 16 towers.
