SK7726 : Church of St Denys, Goadby Marwood
taken 7 years ago, near to Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire, England
The church consists of aisled nave with chancel, south porch and west tower. A Victorian vestry is attached to the north side of the chancel.
The body of the church dates from the 14th century. Although the north aisle is earlier, 13th century, it appears that the arcade was rebuilt with the nave. Arcades are in Decorated style with octagonal columns and plain capitals.
The clerestory was added in the 15th century in Perpendicular style, and the nave roof is from this period.
Windows show a variety of styles, but generally under square hoods.
The font is a fine example of Decorated work, early 14th century, octagonal with different tracery on each face.
Behind the Victorian pulpit is the backboard of the early 17th century pulpit, dated 1604.
In the north aisle is a fine late Georgian sarcophagus tomb to Edward Manners, in black and white marble.
There are a number of fragments of early stained glass.
The church is Listed Grade I.
