Midford viaduct
Midford viaduct
This is the viaduct featured in the opening shots of the classic Ealing comedy "The Titfield Thunderbolt". About half way along this structure (the exact point varied over the years) the double track section of the S&D ended and the single track line to Bath began. The signalman at Midford signal box, which was at the far end of the viaduct, was responsible for ensuring the loco crews were in possession of the single line token for the trip to Bath. Nowadays the viaduct is part of a permissive path and cycleway between Midford and Wellow; there is a plan to rebuild the railway here but whether it'll ever come to anything, who knows?
