This panel depicts the Town Building and the East Harbour. The distinctive Town Building was funded by public subscription and was constructed in 1815-16 to a design by prominent Scottish architect David Hamilton (1768-1843). It is described as a two storey ashlar classic with tetrastyle G Doric portico. The copper weather vane is a six foot model of a fully rigged sailing ship, which sits 150 feet above sea level.

Erected in what was a harbourside location, the building now sits in an ever decreasing piece of parkland at the entrance to the town centre. The well loved building lay unused for a few years before being extended and converted for community use in the mid 1990s and now includes a library on the ground floor and commercial offices on the upper floor.

The stunning and atmospheric murals were suggested by the Port Glasgow Town Centre Regeneration Forum as a way to brighten up the appearance of the town's railway station.

Funding was provided by local Regeneration company Riverside Inverclyde LinkExternal link and Scotrail's Culture and Arts Fund LinkExternal link .

The 14 individual panels are classed as a single 56 feet long work, by artists Karen Orr and Jim Strachan from the local community organisation RIG Arts LinkExternal link , in collaboration with members of the Old Men's Club, Port Glasgow Community Council and pupils of St John's Primary School

Each of the 14 panels depicts an aspect of the town's culture and history, including industry, the railways, sport and Newark Castle, cleverly blending the past with the present.
