I'm not yet off the Millennium Bridge and I've already seen Number Two and Three: to the left where St Mary Mounthaw was before the Great Fire LinkExternal link and, in the centre, the parish church to which it was united St Mary Somerset LinkExternal link where now only the tower remains

When I was at school I remember learning that there were a hundred churches in the City of London before the Great Fire of 1666. Then you start thinking: that can't be true, can it? I do recall, however, from my reading of the great diarist how often he mentions one. So, one gloomy November Sunday I set off to see how many sites I could find...
