NY5674 : Bewcastle Cross
taken 8 years ago, near to Bewcastle, Cumbria, England
Built using stone from a Roman fort, St Cuthbert’s was established about 1277 – although only the east end of this building remains. The Church was altered to its present form in 1901, with a millennium/centenary window added in 2001.
The 7th Century Bewcastle Cross is prominent in the graveyard. In addition to runic inscriptions and vine-scroll decorations, the cross also features carvings of John the Baptist (holding the Lamb of God), Christ as King and a figure believed to be St John the Evangelist. The meaning of the runic inscriptions is not certain and may read “This token of victory, Hwaetred, Waethgar set up in memory of Alefrid ... Pray for them, their sins and their souls!
