The Bewcastle: Past and Present exhibition, housed in a converted building in the churchyard of St Cuthbert's church, was opened by Rory Stewart, MP for Penrith and the Border, on 14 March 2014. It is a celebration of over 2500 years of local history - from the Bronze Age to the Roman occupation, through Norman and medieval times, to the Border Reivers and the more peaceful scattered farming community of today.

There is a photo of the mural, an impression of Bewcastle through the ages by Kate Norris, on the inner wall of the exhibition here NY5674 : Bewcastle past and present

The house behind is the Old Rectory, now a private house which was listed under the name 'Banna', after the Roman Fort of Birdoswald. As it actually stands within the Roman Fort of Bewcastle, a better name might have been, 'Fanum Cocidii'.

St Cuthbert’s Church, Bewcastle (provided by The Carlisle Kid)

Built using stone from a Roman fort, St Cuthbert’s was established about 1277 – although only the east end of this building remains. The Church was altered to its present form in 1901, with a millennium/centenary window added in 2001.
The 7th Century Bewcastle Cross is prominent in the graveyard. In addition to runic inscriptions and vine-scroll decorations, the cross also features carvings of John the Baptist (holding the Lamb of God), Christ as King and a figure believed to be St John the Evangelist. The meaning of the runic inscriptions is not certain and may read “This token of victory, Hwaetred, Waethgar set up in memory of Alefrid ... Pray for them, their sins and their souls!
A Bewcastle community web-site covers both the history of St Cuthbert’s (LinkExternal link ) and the Cross (LinkExternal link ). Additional information may be found on Wikipedia at: LinkExternal link and at “Visit Cumbria”: LinkExternal link
