Lambeth Hill meets Upper Thames Street, you can see a footbridge. The former church of St Michael, Queenhithe LinkExternal link was here until 1876, no longer needed in an increasingly resident-free city. It now lies under one of the area's modified roads, straightened and widened to accommodate the huge increase in external traffic coming into the "Square Mile".
In Pepys' footsteps

When I was at school I remember learning that there were a hundred churches in the City of London before the Great Fire of 1666. Then you start thinking: that can't be true, can it? I do recall, however, from my reading of the great diarist how often he mentions one. So, one gloomy November Sunday I set off to see how many sites I could find...
