Down Hill to Slad - Painswick, Gloucestershire
This track, part of the 55 mile Wysis Way from Monmouth to Kemble, leads south-west past Down Farm to the hamlet of Steanbridge and on into the village of Slad which sits either side of the B4070 Stroud - Birdlip road. The village was 'put on the map' by author Laurie Lee with his book 'Cider with Rosie' - refreshment is available at the only remaining pub, the Woolpack. I spent 13 years living in Stroud and there once was another pub in Slad, a little further north on the western side of the B4070, but on my visits there were never any other customers and at some time it finally closed. The Wysis Way was devised by Gerry Stewart of Countryside Matters and runs from Monmouth to Kemble by way of Gloucester - a guidebook is available written by the author along with a number of other routes that have been published by him. Time taken 2.48 pm BST (British Summer Time).
