ST5688 : In the shadow of the Severn Bridge

In the shadow of the Severn Bridge
In the shadow of the Severn Bridge
This is the hamlet of Old Passage, so named (I presume) because it's where the ferry across the Severn used to depart from (and arrive at) before the bridge was opened in 1966. The remains of the jetty, approach road, toll house and turnstiles are still there ... Andy Dolman's ST5688 : Remains of the office for the old Severn ferry crossing, as well as many of his other photos from this grid square, shows the remains. It's hard to imagine queues of cars and people here, waiting for the ferry, and even harder to reconcile the sheer volume of heavy traffic which now crosses the two Severn bridges with such a sleepy village!
