Crown & Mitre Hotel, December 2016
Seen on a cold December morning, the Crown & Mitre Hotel was built in 1905 on the site of an earlier coffee shop and coaching inn, which gave shelter to the Jacobite rebels following the siege of Carlisle in 1745.
As this was a private hotel with no public bars, it was exempt from the State Management Scheme of 1916-73. However, construction of the Crown & Mitre caused the demolition of the Spread Eagle Inn, which dated to circa 1795 and is now somewhere under the hotel car park.
