The Glenfield Tunnel is just over a mile long and was built between 182932, at a final cost of 17,326, it formed part of the Leicester & Swannington railway. It was in use for over 130 years until its closure in the 1960s.
The redundant tunnel was bought by Leicester City Council for 5, and later underwent 500,000 of strengthening work in 2007-8.
The western portal of the tunnel at Stephenson Court in Glenfield has been sealed up. The eastern portal near the Gilroes Cemetery is now buried.
