Construction on site of Burgh Hall
West Dunbartonshire's new council offices will be here. The view is from a car park that is just beyond the eastern boundary of the construction site. See NS3975 : Construction on site of Burgh Hall for a view from another angle, and for further details.

At an earlier stage of construction, a large circular pit, like a well, but about 15 metres in diameter, had been exposed at the eastern end of the site (the foreground). It can be seen on some satellite views.

That large circular feature corresponds to the site of the larger of two gasometers that stood in the gasworks here in about 1860; the other, slightly smaller gasometer was a few metres to its SSW, separated from it by a small building, which was a meter house. The gasworks was subsequently expanded several times; see NS3975 : Remains of Dumbarton Prison for more comments about the former use of the area that it came to occupy.

The surviving facade of the building behind the crane is to be preserved: NS3975 : The Old Burgh Hall.
Construction on Dumbarton Burgh Hall site
Behind the preserved facade of the old Dumbarton Academy building on Church Street, a low building, a burgh hall, was demolished in mid-2015 to make way for the new offices of West Dunbartonshire Council.
