Up to the downs [3]
Up to the downs [3]
The land rises steeply up to the downs. Seen from the footpath this is the rise which is Beacon Hill. The bottom of Beacon Hill is known as Bloody Ditch were many Parliamentarians met their death.

From LinkExternal link

"Their horses snorting in fear, and with the ecstatic cries of the pursuing enemy ringing in their ears, the Roundhead cavalry bolted for their lives. Imagine their horror, seconds later, when they were greeted with the dizzying sight of a precipitous 300ft gully "where never horse went down or up before".

Hundreds of terrified men and horses hurtled to their deaths in a tangled mass of arms, legs and hooves down the steep slope from the top of windswept Roundway Down. And in their eagerness to catch the fleeing Parliamentarians many Cavalier horsemen met a similar fate after failing to stop in time."
