Delapré Abbey, Northampton
Delapré Abbey, Northampton
Evidence of some of the on-going restoration work ("2016-May 2017"). This is a view through one of the security fence observation windows on the west side of the premises. Delapré Abbey (or more correctly The Abbey of St Mary de la Pré (i.e. the Abbey of St Mary in the Meadow) was created as one of only two Cluniac establishments for nuns in England. It was founded during the reign of King Stephen and held a Royal Charter from King Edward III. However, it was surrendered to the crown during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and it closed in 1538. Much later on, after lengthy periods as a private residence and then for WWII-related activities, Northampton Corporation purchased the estate for £56,000 and it was converted for use as the Northamptonshire Record Office and for the library of the Northamptonshire Record Society. It is a Grade II* listed building managed by the Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust. Almost nothing of the medieval buildings remain and the buildings and grounds visible today are result of work that was begun after the house passed into the hands of the Tate family following the departure of the nuns.
