Select Property Group has developed the eight-storey block (using the main contractor, Carillion) containing 259 studio apartments and six two-bedroom flats on land once occupied by Westgate House, a concrete carbuncle knocked down seven years ago following a campaign calling for its demolition NZ2463 : 44 Westgate Road, Newcastle
Trevor Moore, CEO of Vita Student, said: “Whilst the number of purpose built student accommodation developments in Newcastle is on the rise, so are student numbers. Even when the current developments are open we estimate that there will still be 30,000 students that do not have access to such accommodation.”

The building to the left of George Stephenson's Monument (with his back to Central Station) is the Union Rooms NZ2463 : Union Rooms, Westgate Road. New metal railings erected for pedestrian safety on the monument's island feature a castle motif reflecting that of the Castle Keep NZ2563 : Castle Keep, Newcastle and the Three Castles emblem of the city.

George Stephenson Statue, Westgate Road
Erected in 1862 to the design of J.G. Lough. The heroic figure of one of the country's leading engineers is surrounded at each corner of the plinth by figures representing the areas of Stephenson's achievements - a miner, locomotive engineer, blacksmith and plate layer. Wide step to plinth and tapered octagonal pedestal supporting seated figure of George Stephenson. Over 100,000 people attended the official unveiling in 1862.
