Demolition gap on west side of Grainger Street, just north of Chaucer Buildings NZ2464 : Grainger Street, west side. The modern building that was there before, can be seen here NZ2464 : Grainger Street, NE1 (west side). Demolition precedes development of the area which includes the 1960s Newgate Shopping Centre and hotel NZ2464 : Hotel, Newgate Street, Newcastle
Blue hoardings surrounding the site are those of the main contractor, McAleer & Rushe, who are to build student accommodation, a new 269-bedroom hotel and 2,000 sq m of commercial space for retail, leisure or professional services. The plans for the coming massive re-development within Newcastle's historic Grainger Town have been very controversial Link
