The upper part of the Alan Shearer statue can be seen in the foreground. The 9ft bronze sculpture at St James' Park, named 'Local Hero', was unveiled to local football fans on Monday, 12th September 2016. Northumberland artist Tom Maley has depicted the striker's famous hand-in-the-air goal celebration.
The statue cost £250,000, paid for by former Newcastle United club chairman, Freddy Shepherd.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
