King Alfred Car Park (2), Hove
A rather nondescript car park located between Kingsway and Hove Street South and accessed via the latter. The site, however, was once occupied by the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from the 1890s until they moved to TQ2604 : Maritime House, Basin Road North, Aldrington, Hove in 1968. The battery house included a gun salvaged from German cruiser Koenigsberg which had been involved in the East African campaign during World War One. The land was purchased by Hove Council for a planned extension to the King Alfred Centre who subsequently demolished all the buildings in 1969 with the exception of the steps at the northern end. The extension never occurred and the space has been used as a car park ever since. Beyond are TQ2804 : Viceroy Lodge, Kingsway, Hove to the left and TQ2804 : Lancaster Court, Kingsway, Hove to the right which occupy the site of Hove's former Coastguard Cottages. See also TQ2804 : King Alfred Car Park (1), Hove for the opposite view.
