Ducks on a frozen lake, Burgess Park
Ducks on the lake in Burgess Park, on a very cold but sunny January morning. The surface of the lake had frozen overnight, the ducks were standing on the ice as it started to melt.

The block of flats in the background is part of the Aylesbury Estate.
Burgess Park
Burgess Park, in inner South East London, is unusual as it is a large park created on a "brownfield" site.

The area was previously occupied by streets, houses and light industry as well as a branch of the Surrey Canal. Plans to create a park here started in the 1940s. At the time, there was very little green open space in this part of inner city London.

The park gradually grew, but in rather haphazard fashion with decaying, abandoned roads still cutting into the park. In 2011-2012 the park closed for about a year so that major work could be done to regenerate the park.
Aylesbury Estate :: TQ3378
Further south in Walworth than the Heygate Estate, the Aylesbury was an even more ambitious scale of urban redevelopment. Its many long medium-rise blocks, constructed from 1963 to 1977 were intended to house 10,000 people in an area of around 28 hectares. They replaced streets of mainly 19th century low-rise housing. Designed by Hans Peter Trenton, the design philosophy of the estate was to keep housing above ground level, with raised walkways connecting the buildings and only cars and services at ground level.

By 1990 problems of crime, anti-social behaviour and a failed district heating system made the estate an undesirable place to live. In 2005 it was decided to redevelop the area again with a mix of up to 50% "affordable" housing. The reconstruction will take about 20 years.
