NT2473 : Rosebank Cottages, Fountainbridge
taken 7 years ago, near to Edinburgh, Scotland
A programme of experimental housing for artisans, mechanics and other workers that began in 1850 and continued until 1901. There are 10 such ‘colonies’ in Edinburgh. All are in Conservation Areas and four are B-listed as historically important. They all have a similar pattern of two-storey stone-built terraces. The ground floor is a self-contained house with its own entrance from its garden on one side, and the upper floor is a self-contained house with garden and access by steps from the other side – in all except the first ‘colony’ [Shaw’s Place] the steps are external. The Edinburgh Colonies Conservation Area Character Appraisal publication [February 2014] Link gives a good illustrated and detailed account of their history and current requirements for management.
