Edward Burnell effigy, Sibthorpe church
Alabaster monument with effigy of Edward Burnell, died 1589. He is seen lying with his head on a book. Below are putti holding a shield. The base is cracked in two. At his feet is a grinning skull which Victorians disliked, so they covered it, inserting metal pegs into both eyes!

The Burnell family were prominent in several parts of Nottinghamshire. Edward married Barbara, who was the widow of Richard Whalley SK7243 : Memorial to Richard Whalley, Screveton church.
The tomb was probably made by Roiley of Chellaston,
Derbyshire, and was moved into its current position in the 19th century.
