Leeds Dam replacement (Detail)
Leeds Dam replacement (Detail)
The weir below Crown Point Bridge, otherwise known as Leeds Dam, dates from the mid 19th century and replaced an earlier 17th century version associated with a mill race.

It is listed Grade 2 (list entry 1375063) but listed building consent was obtained for its replacement with a more modern structure permitting flow variations - a "moveable weir" - on the basis that removal of the existing weir was "necessary to secure substantial public benefits relating to flood alleviation". A section of the existing weir will be retained to show some evidence of the original construction and materials.
(extracts from list description and Leeds Council planning application no 15/00651/FU).

The steel footbridge crossing the photo is a temporary one for construction workers.
