Remains of Twyford End Lock, Itchen Navigation
This was lock 2, the locks being numbered downstream from Winchester. It was a pound lock, most were turf-sided, this may have been one of these. The brickwork is dated 1749. This is the upper gates end, which has been converted into a weir, although it is now dry for some distance upstream (I think there is a dam) and very silted up downstream to the main river. The lower gates may have been where there is a disused and apparently private footbridge. The black spot on the brickwork is a modern name plaque which calls it Twyford End Lock - some references call it Twyford Lane End Lock.
