Bridge Detail, Castlefield Viaducts
An interesting feature of the bridges at Giant's Basin (see SJ8397 : Bridgewater Canal, Castlefield Viaducts at Giant's Basin) is the use of "mini-castles" to top the piers. The building of the railway destroyed the site which was once the Roman settlement of Mamucium; it is thought that the castles were added as an nod to the Roman fort which once stood here.
