Giant plughole in action
It would be interesting to have a photograph taken when there is so much water overflowing that it effectively 'blocks' air, at which point the Coriolis force would presumably create a giant whirlpool. Apparently the correct name for this type of overflow device is Bellmouth spillway or Glory Hole spillway. To see this one in drier times see
