A view of TQ2804 : Courtenay Terrace, Kingsway, Hove from King's Esplanade. From left to right: Courtenay House, Courtenay Tye, Courtenay Beach, Courtenay Lodge, Courtenayside, Courtenay Towers and Little Courtenay. The first four were constructed in the 1840s, Courtenayside and Courtenay Towers were originally a single residence called Hove Lea that had been built in 1876 and divided and refurbished in 1933, Little Courtenay was built in 1899. All the residences originally possessed their own private beach at the southern end of their gardens. The beach was lost to a compulsory purchase order in 1908 when the council wished to strengthen the beach defences.
