NS4179 : A lichen - Ramalina fraxinea

A lichen - Ramalina fraxinea
A lichen - Ramalina fraxinea
For context, see NS4179 : Plantation viewed from clear lane.

The title refers to the species with the long (about 8cm), wrinkled, strap-like lobes. Ramalina fraxinea is said to be "locally frequent on nutrient-rich bark, now rare in many areas" ["Lichens: An Illustrated Guide", 5ed, Dobson, 2005]. I rarely see it, but its appearance is striking.

The lichen above the centre of the image bearing numerous disks (apothecia) is a different species, although it is attached to almost the same spot on the twig; I did not examine it in detail, but it looks like the more common NS3778 : A lichen - Ramalina fastigiata. It can be seen in the present picture that it has a slightly different colour: warmer, tending more towards yellow-green than to the grey-green of the other lichen. The shrubby lichen below the centre of the image is yet another Ramalina species.

Not all lichens are equally pollution-sensitive (for example, one species, Lecanora conizaeoides, has declined as air quality has improved, allowing more sensitive species to compete with it), but Ramalina fraxinea is very sensitive to pollution, and its presence here indicates good air quality.

On the Hawksworth and Rose Zone scale of air quality, which ranges from 0 ("most polluted") to 10 ("pure"), R. fraxinea is assigned to zone 10, indicating the greatest sensitivity to pollution; R. fastigiata, also prominent in the photo, is likewise very sensitive, though not as much so, and is assigned to zone 9.
