Dumbarton Prison: entrance portico
Dumbarton Prison: entrance portico
This entrance survives in place; it was originally set in the middle of the facade of the prison, from which it projected slightly. For the door, see NS3975 : Dumbarton Prison: door. For the Burgh Arms on top, see NS3975 : Dumbarton Prison: Burgh Arms.

The prison facade was taller than this entrance, and was considerably wider (on both sides) than the wall in which the entrance is now set. That wall dates only from 1973, and it was built when the A814 (Glasgow Road, visible on the left in this picture) was realigned in that year. The prison stood in the way of that realignment; the northeastern corner of the prison reached to the other side of what is now Glasgow Road.

Other details from the prison are preserved in the 1973 boundary wall, although not in their original positions: NS3975 : Dumbarton Prison: cell windows / NS3975 : Dumbarton Prison - Crown Stone.
Dumbarton Prison

A Geograph article Link discusses the prison in detail. It was built from 182426, enlarged in 1863, and closed in 1883. It then held county records until 1965. During the realignment of Glasgow Road in 1973, the prison was almost entirely demolished. An entrance portico survives in place; some cell windows and a Royal Cipher have also been preserved, and are now incorporated in the modern (1973) boundary wall.
