Pre-Worboys roadsign in Handsworth
Pre-Worboys roadsign in Handsworth
This remarkable survivor of early-mid 20th century road signage sits, looking rather forlorn and neglected, just north of the roundabout on Oxhill Road. Its remaining arms point east to Witton, Perry Bar and Erdington, although the ones pointing west towards Sandwell, West Brom, Smethwick and the like have broken off.
Pre-Worboys road signs

These are known as pre-Worboys signs because in 1965 new signs were introduced acting on the recommendations of the Worboys Committee which had been tasked with reviewing the UK's road signage. The new designs have mostly remained in current use with only minor changes.
