ST2859 : Covering the field of fire

taken 2 years ago, 4 km from Brean, Somerset, Great Britain

Covering the field of fire
Covering the field of fire
The old fort on Brean Down was reactivated following the declaration of war with Germany. A six inch naval gun (one of a pair recycled from scrapped WWI ships!) was mounted here over an old emplacement.
The guns could fire a shell over twenty miles - well over the Channel to Wales! In the distance is Steep Holm, also a fortified site.
