Compton Wynyates
Compton Wynyates is described in Pevsner as 'the perfect picture-book house of the Early Tudor decades, the most perfect in England in the specific pictureeque'. The house is very much as it was when built in the early 16th century by Sir William Compton. Here it is viewed from the entrance gates. The house is private and not open to the public, this presumably is why it is omitted from Simon Jenkins' book, 'England's Thousand Best Houses'. I remember when Compton Wynyates was open to the public and regret I didn't take the opportunity to visit it.
