Power in the deep
Power in the deep
The old fort was built in the late 1800s and featured a large dry moat walling to separate it from the rest of the headland. When hostilities broke out in WWII, the fort was rearmed. This is the shell of the old engine house, built in the depth of the moat in 1941. It housed a 22kW diesel generator that ran the searchlights and the guns. An information board recounts how the men used to cause a power cut by swapping 40/60W bulbs in their rooms for 100/150W versions!
