This well-preserved headstone from the end of the 18th century stands at the southern entrance to St Alphege's churchyard:

In Memory of
Nearly sixty Years
Clerk and Sexton of this Pariſh
who died Decr. the 9th. 1798.
Aged 74 Years.
This be his Record. "Sober not auſtere
"A Church man, honeſt to his Church, lies here
"Content to tread where wiſer feet had trod
"He loved Establiſh'd modes of serving God.
"Thou poor content; unenvious, Void of Art.
"He daily taught the poor with chearful Heart
"To life's extremest Verge his Race was run
"His labours ceaſ'd but with the setting Sun
"His Task well done, by his Great Master bleſt
"This good and faithful servant sank to Reſt.
