Ordsall Chord, Revealing Stephenson's Bridge
Ordsall Chord, Revealing Stephenson's Bridge
This twin-arched railway bridge carried the former Liverpool to Manchester railway over River Irwell. The bridge, designed by George Stephenson and built in 1830, is historically significant as it was an integral component of the former Liverpool Road Station to the east (now part of the Museum of Science and Industry). The station, also designed by George Stephenson, was the eastern terminus of the world's first passenger railway line to operate solely using steam locomotives. The bridge is a Grade I listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1391927 LinkExternal link Historic England).context to merit listing at Grade I.

During construction work for the Ordsall Chord, the iron girder bridge (which had been attached to the side of the brick bridge) has been removed, revealing the western side of the bridge. It is planned that this will be restored as construction of the Ordsall Chord is completed.
The Ordsall Chord

The Ordsall Chord (also known as the Ordsall Lane Chord, Ordsall Curve or Castlefield Curve) is a short stretch of railway line currently (2016/17) under construction in the Ordsall area of Salford. It will link the mainline railway stations at Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria.

First proposed in the 1970s (as the "Castlefield Curve"), parliamentary powers for construction of the link were received in 1979 but the project was cancelled. The proposal was revived in 2010 as part of Network Railís Manchester Northern Hub proposal. It is scheduled to be completed by December 2017, and will cost around £85 million to construct.
