Abercynon which as the name suggests is at the mouth of the River Cynon where it joins the River Taff.

Richard Trevithick - Abercynon was the terminus of the world's first steam-powered railway journey when on February 21st 1804 the inventor Richard Trevithick drove a steam locomotive from Penydarren ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil to the Glamorgan Canal basin in Abercynon towing carriages containing iron and passengers. The distance of nearly 10 miles (16km) took 4 hours and 5 minutes and attracted much attention.

John Ewington - a blue plaque is nearby. Link

Trails - the Trevithick Trail from Abercynon to Merthyr Tydfil follows the old tram route on which Trevithick's journey ran. Also locally is the Taff Trail, a walking and cycling route from Brecon to Cardiff.
