Folkingham Manor House, 8 Market Place, Folkingham
Grade II* Listed country house of about 1650 initially called Clinton House with 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. Theophilus Clinton, 4th Earl of Lincoln, 12th Baron Clinton (C1600-1667), a leading Puritan, built the Manor for his son Edward and it consequently shows a sophistication of detail that reflects a product of the Protectorate. Pevsner describes it as an “uncommonly fine Manor House”. It is built from the stone taken from Abbey of Sempringham, a casualty of the dissolution of the monasteries over one hundred years earlier. The stone may well have previously been used at Clinton's house in Sempringham that was a ruin by this time. In 1690 the manor was sold to Richard Wynne starting a hundred year association with the family. A young Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 4th Baronet purchased the Manor in 1788 and he was to have influence on Folkingham and developed it into a prosperous Georgian market town. The Manor was finally sold in 1920 by Thomas Heathcote. John Joseph Baker purchased the Manor House that passed to his son in 1949 to be purchased by architect John Howard Leech in 1967 who spent time and money restoring it. Duncan Alexander Lingard purchased it in 1984 and later sold it to Ian Grant. It changed hands again in 2000 and sales particulars appear in 2014 and 2016. The Manor is one of a relatively small number built in the turbulent times of the mid 17th century that provides a bridge between the architecture of the Elizabethan era and the great Baroque revival.
