Christchurch spire
Christchurch spire
Interchangeably known as Christchurch or Greyfriars spire, the spire is the sole remaining part of the Greyfriars (Franciscan) friary established in the 13th century. The spire itself dates from the 14th century. The original church was demolished after the dissolution of the friary in 1539. A new church was added in the 1830s and was known as Christchurch. However, this too was demolished after it suffered damage in WWII. After demolition of the neighbouring Spire House offices, the spire now stands alone again until the building work seen here is completed.
