The station was designed by architect Charles Holden
Link and has been described as a significant work of modern architecture. When it opened in September 1932 it was the most northerly station on the first section of the Piccadilly line extension from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters, and was the terminus until services were further extended to Oakwood in March 1933

The station has three tracks and four platforms - as shown in the photo, platforms 2 and 3 are either side of the central track. This is an example of the so-called "Spanish solution" which helps to speed up boarding and alighting
