Snake's head fritillary, North Meadow National Nature Reserve, Cricklade
This doesn't appear to be a bumper year for these fascinating plants but at least they are accessible. In previous years the meadow has been flooded long after it should have been.
Snake's head fritillaries in North Meadow, Cricklade
The ancient meadow is a National Nature Reserve and is fortunate to have survived intact after many similar meadows were ploughed up during the second world war for food production. This means that the meadow is of particular value for its annual display of the snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). Some years are better than others but a visit to the meadow is never wasted. More about the fritillary on wikipedia Link
