Wigan War Memorial
Wigan's war memorial was unveiled in 1925 outside the Parish Church. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, the monument is a Grade II* listed building LinkExternal link
The memorial is in the form of an octagonal tower on stepped base with an ornate spire. Above the base are panels containing the Roll of Honour which commemorates the fallen soldiers from the town in the First World War and other conflicts. Buttresses at each corner of the shaft terminate in crocketed finials. Above these are eight angels holding wreaths. The top of shaft is decorated with tracery, surmounted by a cross supported by flying buttresses.

In 1935, it was discovered that the lettering of original marble Roll of Honour was weathering badly so it was replaced by bronze tablets which were themselves stolen in 2006; a year later they were replaced through council funding.

The inscription on the southern face reads:
REMEMBER THE MEN OF WIGAN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918

and on the side facing the church:
A GOOD LIFE HATH BUT FEW DAYS; BUT A GOOD NAME ENDURETH FOR EVER
All Saints Parish Church, Wigan

All Saints Church was established in Saxon times and was probably built on the site of a temple in the Roman settlement of Coccium. The present structure is at least the third building on the site. Major rebuilding took place in 1620 and 1849 and further restorations were made from 1898-1902, from 1947-1957 and from 2002-2006.
