SE3556 : The House in the Rock

taken 19 years ago, near to Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, England

The House in the Rock
The House in the Rock
This curious building was constructed by Thomas Hill, a local linen weaver between 1770 and 1791. Four rooms, one above the other, were hewn out of the rock, and Thomas lived here with his wife and 6 children. The castellations were added later and the building became known as 'Fort Montague'. The smaller separate building [top right] was a tea room. The house was a tourist attraction for many years until 1996. Not currently open to visitors.
