Caerlaverock Castle
Caerlaverock Castle
Dating originally from the 13th century, by 1295 the triangular moated castle was a mighty stronghold, the power centre and home of Sir Herbert Maxwell and his family. By 1635, it was a fashionable mansion where guests could admire the splendid new fašade of the Nithsdale Lodging completed in 1634.
The round tower in the foreground is Murdoch's Tower and contained in part a grim pit-prison, reputedly the holding cell for Murdoch, Duke of Albany, before his execution in 1425.
