Planter supplanting drinking fountain
The planter stands on a concrete base for a former drinking fountain in the Memorial Park. The sign at the right shows a picture of two youngsters drinking from the fountain in 1945 and states that the fountain was removed in the 1960s. In the 1960s there was a fountain here (and another nearer the former children's playground) that looked quite different - a smooth polished metal structure with a lever that released a vertical spout of water that could be drunk without touching any metal parts, unlike the one illustrated which had a drinking cup attached by a chain.
