Cromwell's Bridge, River Hodder
Cromwell's Bridge, River Hodder
Tudor packhorse bridge over the River Hodder, dating to the 1560s and disused since it was replaced in 1819 by the Lower Hodder Bridge, 100 yards upstream. The connection with Oliver Cromwell dates from 16th August 1648, when his 8,000-strong army passed over it on their way to fight the Battle of Preston. The bridge's three arches have lost their original road surface and parapets, though the structure has withstood some severe flooding in recent years. This is the view looking upstream with the 1819 bridge in the background.
