Polling station at Glinton Village Hall
The village hall on High Street served as a polling station on May 4th., 2017, as voters chose the first directly elected mayor for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. This was one of six newly created combined authorities in England to hold elections for the post of mayor on the same day.
The combined authorities were set up as a result of voluntary agreements by two or more local councils to cooperate across existing council boundaries in order to implement transport and economic policy more effectively using powers delegated by national government. The May 2017 local elections were regarded as an important test of voting intentions in the run-up to the snap United Kingdom general election called by Prime Minister Theresa May for June 8th., 2017.
The village hall was originally constructed as a Primitive Methodist chapel, opening in 1861. The chapel closed in the 1970s and the building was converted to its present function in 1980.
